Britons spend big at garden centres and DIY stores over Easter

Britons to spend an extra £290m at garden centres and DIY stores this Easter weekend

Britons will spend an extra £290m at garden centres and DIY stores this Easter weekend.

Forecasters at the Centre for Economics and Business Research said the 25 per cent rise in spend means stores such as B&Q, Homebase, and discounter B&M will share a mammoth £1.4billion.

The figures highlight the mismatch between shops that can open and those shut under lockdown. DIY store sales rose by more than a third in the final quarter of 2020.

The British Retail Consortium estimates shops lost £2billion of sales each week they shut. Overall sales (or sales at all shops) this weekend should hit £8.1billion – £290m per household – the second lowest in five years.
