Martin Roberts discloses real reason people watch Homes Under The Hammer

Martin Roberts, 56, revealed the real reason behind Homes Under The Hammer’s surge of millennial viewers, admitting there’s probably only one reason why they watch it. Chatting to Mo Gilligan on his Homes Under The Hammer Time YouTube channel, where he discusses his reactions to various properties featured on the show, the presenter admitted it’s probably a happy accident they discovered the program.

Mo began by pointing out the increase in viewership over the past year as the UK continues in lockdown.

“It’s had a boom with this millennial generation, why do you think there’s been a surge of people getting into it?” Mo wondered.

Martin giggled as he replied: “Well, I think people have been at home at the time of day they would usually have been working!

“And I suppose they think, ‘Oh I’m cheesed off, I’m going to watch a bit of telly for some light relief,’ and they discover Homes Under The Hammer.”

The ever-popular show has been going for 17 years, since it started out in 2003.

And it’s growing fan base is very evident as Martin revealed that the property show boasted ratings higher than some of BBC’s top series put together.

“On one bank holiday, we were the most watched program throughout the entire day on BBC One,” he beamed, noting it had an estimated 36% audience share.

The host added: “It’s crazy! But here it still is and I’m really proud of it.

“There was this amazing research done by YouGov and we discovered – believe this or not – it’s more popular than Game of Thrones, Peaky Blinders and Killing Eve combined!”

Mo was astonished at the revelation and went on to tell Martin why he is among their loyal viewers.

“What is wrong with the way I do up my coat?!” he exclaimed, sounding confused as Mo flung back his head with laughter.

“Because you’re always having a go at the bottom button thing!”

He continued: “Look, I’m a property expert, I’m not a designer! I don’t know how to do up a coat!”

Martin barely took a breather as he said: “What is the cool way to do up your coat, Mo?

“The first thing you say is, ‘Oh look he’s got his bottom button done up,’ and I’m like, ‘Lay off the coat Mo!'”

“Listen to what I’m saying about the property!”

After his rant was over, Mo managed to stop laughing for a brief moment to reply.

He giggled: “I don’t know whether it’s a thing when you’re on set but you have this one button on the coat and I think it’s a pet peeve, I’m like, ‘Come on man!’

“Why can’t the producer just say, ‘Martin, your bottom button is….'” Mo creased over with laughter again, unable to get his words out as he wiped tears away from his eyes.

Homes Under The Hammer airs weekdays at 10am one BBC One.
