PlayStation Play at Home free games: Release date, launch time for PS4 and PSVR freebies

Whether you’ve got a PS4, a PS5 or PlayStation VR, Sony has a surprise in store for you.

The next phase in Sony’s Play at Home scheme is about to go live, as a whopping nine new games join the service for free.

With the COVID-19 situation forcing people to stay indoors, Sony’s remarkable giveaway is centred around keeping people entertained during lockdown.

Sony kicked off this year’s Play at Home scheme by giving away Ratchet and Clank for free.

The excellent Ratchet and Clank reboot – which is also playable on PS5 thanks to backwards compatibility – is available as a free download until March 31.

In the meantime, Sony’s Play at Home scheme continues with an additional nine games available later this week.

This includes Abzu, Enter the Gungeon, Rez Infinite, Subnautica, The Witness, Astro Bot Rescue Mission, Moss, Thumper and Paper Beast.

The free PS4 and PSVR games have a March 26 release date, and a 3am GMT launch time for fans living in the UK.

Best of all, you don’t need a PlayStation Plus subscription or PlayStation NOW membership to enjoy the free games.

Anybody with a PS4 or PS5 can download and keep the PlayStation games for free.

Just remember to purchase the games and add them to your library by April 23, because that’s when the giveaway ends.

It’s a blockbuster line-up full of critically-acclaimed games for both PlayStation 4 and PSVR.

Playable on PS5, PS4 and PlayStation VR, Rez Infinite is my pick of the bunch – especially if you’re able to experience the game in virtual reality.

Described as a “thrilling journey of sights, sounds and shooting action”, Rez Infinite is an expanded remaster of the classic Dreamcast and PS2 game.

Subnautica is another game that’s well worth checking out, although it’s not for the faint of heart.

The underwater survival game tasks players with exploring an alien ocean world that’s teeming with dazzling and deadly wildlife.

Then there’s Astro Bot Rescue Mission, which might be the most inventive platform game since Super Mario Galaxy.

If you’re looking for something a little (actually, a lot) more challenging, then mysterious puzzle game The Witness will give your brain a solid workout.

The game transports players to an open-world island setting that’s packed full of puzzles.

And the good news doesn’t end there, because Sony is planning to give away another free game in the coming weeks.

One of the company’s biggest and best exclusives of the past generation, Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition will be available for free on April 20.

As the name suggests, Horizon Zero Dawn Complete Edition contains the base game and DLC.

This includes the excellent Frozen Wilds expansion, as well as a variety of in-game items and outfits, not to mention a digital art book and PS4 theme.

With sequel Horizon Forbidden West launching later this year, Sony’s Play at Home scheme is a great way to get up to speed.
