US chain Popeyes to open fried chicken restaurants across UK creating hundreds of jobs

Popeyes announced on Tuesday that it hopes to welcome customers to the first UK location by the end of 2021. Founded in New Orleans in 1972, the fast-food company is known for its Southern-style menu that includes spicy chicken sandwiches, crispy chicken tenders and fried seafood.

There are more than 3,000 Popeyes restaurants already in the US and around the world. The move to the UK follows other successful expansions in Spain, Switzerland, China, the Philippines and Sri Lanka.

Elias Diaz Sese, Popeyes UK co-founder, said: “We are very pleased to launch Popeyes, a brand that has brought moments of celebration to guests globally, something we believe is important more now than ever.

“It allows us to contribute in moments of hardship for the country by creating hundreds of career opportunities.”

He told the Evening Standard: “It’s the right time for us to enter the UK market. Everybody needs a little joy right now.

A third excitedly said: “Finally!! Yaaaaaas!”

Some, however, were not so impressed. One said: “More like brings diabetes to the UK,” and another followed: “If this is the case, the UK needs its National Health Service now more than ever.”

And a third sarcastically said: “This is fantastic, the UK just doesn’t have enough fried chicken based fast food outlets.” And another followed “Popeyes literally has no idea what it’s up against,” with a photo montage of several UK fried chicken chains.

The locations of the new restaurants are yet to be revealed but Popeyes said it plans to use dine-in, delivery and takeaway services.
