He said: “Government direction to ‘stay local’ in the pandemic has locked many communities into high pump prices, even among the supermarkets that have benefited from being able to stay open.

“Before the pandemic, the supermarkets often fought each other over the price of fuel.

“Once locked down, their customers not only had limited choice where to shop but how far they could go to refuel more cheaply.
