Red Bull Salzburg boss Jesse Marsch confirms Celtic job interest

Red Bull Salzburg’s highly-rated manager Jesse Marsch is flattered by rumours linking him to the vacant Celtic job. Neil Lennon left his post last month after failing to secure a tenth consecutive Scottish Premiership title for the club.

A host of top names, such as Roy Keane, Frank Lampard and Steve Clarke are in the running.

Marsch was quizzed on speculation linking him to the Parkhead hotseat and he refused to rule himself out.

“I’ve heard about the link. It’s an honour for me,” he said.

“Three or four years ago, being linked with a club like Celtic would literally be an impossibility for me.

“And now that this is where I am, I always just try to look at it in terms of ‘What would the project look like?’.

“Would we have similar ideas in how to build it the right way, invest in the academy and not just focus on winning?

“Obviously, I know that when you’re the coach of Celtic, winning is the most important thing.

“I know enough about it to say, of course, it’s interesting. But I also have a job to do here.”

The American is on course to win a second straight league and cup double with his Austrian side Salzburg.

The 47-year-old started his managerial career as the assist manager for the American national team.

He then took charge of New York Red Bulls where he was named MLS coach of the year in 2015.

Three years later Marsch joined RB Leipzig as an assistant coach before earning a move to Salzburg, where he has dominated domestically.

Meanwhile, former Chelsea star Pat Nevin has backed his old team-mate Clarke, who is boss of the Scotland national team, to take over the Celtic reigns.

“Every manager knows the job they are in can go pear-shaped very quickly,” he told the Sun.

“Suddenly, maybe the one chance you have to get a very big job is gone.

“I’m not saying Steve Clarke has got a chance of getting this one but he’ll just be getting his head down at the minute.

“He is working out his plans for Scotland’s qualifiers coming up, then he will be looking at the Euros in the summer.

“Celtic would probably like someone who can take the job relatively soon and at the moment, Clarkey clearly isn’t available.

“But the one thing I would say is I think he would be a great Celtic manager.”
