Great news for Freeview fans: Hours of free shows finally return to popular TVs

There’s some great news for fans of Freeview with the company confirming that it’s bringing its popular Play service back to all new LG TVs this year. That means anyone buying a 2021 telly from the Korean tech firm will find Freeview Play pre-installed straight out of the box. This way of watching telly was something that was sadly missing from last year’s LG TVs but that’s now been rectified in this latest update.

With Freeview Play built-in, it means LG Smart TV owners can view some of the UK’s favourite TV, all in one place without needing a separate set-top box or streaming stick plugged into the rear of their gogglebox.

Alongside over 85 live channels, Freeview Play on LG also provides nine on-demand players; BBC iPlayer, ITV Hub, All 4, My5, UKTV Play, CBS CatchUp Channels UK, Horror Bites, STV Player, and BBC Sounds.

That means there’s access to more than 30,000 hours of on-demand TV and over 750 box sets which can all be viewed without paying a penny extra.

The fact there’s no fee to pay is clearly proving popular with Freeview Play recently announcing that it is now the fastest-growing TV platform in the UK with it having its most successful year ever in 2020.

“As we continue to stay at home, TV is one way we can stay connected,” said Owen Jenkinson, Marketing Director at Freeview.

“With over 30,000 hours of content, Freeview Play’s incredible line up is free and easily accessible to all, so whether it’s discussing a Prue Leith innuendo or a First Dates disaster, we can all get involved in the conversation.”

Of course, LG isn’t the only company to include Freeview on its TVs with Sony, Toshiba, JVC and Hisense also selling devices with this service pre-installed.

It’s also worth noting that if you’ve bought a TV that doesn’t have Freeview there are plenty of devices on the market that can bring this free content to the big screen.

Some even offer an experience similar to Sky Q with them able to record multiple programmes at once and play content in full 4K resolution.
