Sorority at Indiana University Bloomington is investigated for hazing pledges in 'blow or blow' game

A sorority at Indiana University Bloomington has been ordered to suspend all activities pending an investigation into hazing claims involving a sex-and-drugs game called ‘blow or blow.’

Langdan Willoughby, a former member of Kappa Kappa Gamma’s Delta Chapter, claimed that during a pledge event last year, she and the other young women were ordered by lingerie-clad sorority sisters wielding wooden paddles to choose between performing oral sex on men, or snorting cocaine, before being told it was all a joke.

Willoughby, 19, shared her account of the incident with Indiana Daily Student last week, which prompted the university to place Kappa Kappa Gamma’s oldest chapter on cease and desist, suspending all of its operations.

‘Delta Chapter of Kappa Kappa Gamma at Indiana University is one of our longest-standing chapters, yet we will not stand by while instances of violence or the threat of violence are perpetuated among our membership,’ the sorority’s national organization said in a statement. ‘The health and safety of our members are always our top priority.’

Willoughby recounted for IU Bloomington’s student newspaper how in February 2020, she and some four dozen other pledges were led into the dark basement at Kappa Kappa Gamma house at 1018 East Third Street, where senior sorority sisters dressed in lingerie ordered them to stand facing the wall in silence.

According to Willoughby, one of the sisters struck her on her backside with a paddle while running around the cellar and laughing.

The sisters then passed around rubber bands to put their hair up, and told the pledges that members of a local fraternity were on their way to take part in a game of ‘blow or blow,’ where the women would have to choose between performing oral sex on the men, or snorting cocaine, according to Willoughby.

‘Get on your knees! The boys are coming,’ she recalled one of the senior sisters yelling at the pledges.

Willoughby told the student paper she tried to find an exit, or call for help, by the sisters had confiscated the pledges’ phones.

A short time later, the senior sisters told the pledges they were ‘just kidding.’ In the end, the pledges did not have to consume drugs, or perform any sex acts that night.

Two unnamed women who were also there that night corroborated details of Willoughby’s account of what happened on Kappa Kappa Gamma’s Big Little Night, which is an annual event when pledges are paired with their mentors.

One of them recalled a senior sister telling them the ‘blow or blow’ game was their punishment for being ‘the worst pledge class ever.’

Willoughby said she was deeply disturbed by what happened and left the sorority last summer, citing the alleged hazing incident as well as instances of racism, which she said she experienced as one of the only black women in the Kappa Kappa Gamma house.

Additional sources speaking on a condition of anonymity told the student newspaper about similar incidents that took place at the sorority in years past, including one woman who recounted how in 2017, pledges were ordered to strip naked and run into the woods.

It was not until one of the pledges burst into tears that the Kappa Kappa Gamma sisters revealed that it was just a prank poking fun at hazing at other sororities, according to the report.

A 2019 pledge class member recounted how they were ordered to stand facing the wall in the dark basement for 15 minutes, while a woman screamed and berated them in front of drunk senior sisters wearing lingerie and high heels.

Willoughby said she decided to come forward in order to raise awareness of hazing at sororities.

IU spokesman Chuck Carney urged students to report claims of wrongdoing to the university so they can be investigated.

The student paper’s unnamed sources said that they had been intimated by Kappa Kappa Gamma members to keep quiet about the pledge rituals.
