The statement continued: ‘Almiron sustained a knee injury and had to be replaced at half-time, while Saint-Maximin suffered a groin injury in the 63rd minute.

‘Both have undergone scans and will continue their rehabilitation with the club’s medical team.

‘Defender Emil Krafth, who was substituted in the same game, is set to resume training later this week.’

The news will come as a big blow for the Magpies, who have found themselves in a relegation fight after a run of poor results in the Premier League.

Steve Bruce’s men have managed just one win and three draws in their last 15 league games, which has seen 18th-placed Fulham close the gap to them to just three points, putting their Premier League status under real threat.

Bruce will now have to face the club’s next three league games without two of his key men, with trips to West Brom and Brighton, and a home game with Aston Villa all coming up in the month of March.

These must-win games will be crucial to Newcastle’s Premier League survival, especially when it is considered how Fulham have turned their form around since Christmas.

Bruce issued a rallying cry to his players after seeing two of his men taken off on Saturday, claiming the goals must come from somewhere else with top-scorer Wilson sidelined, too.

Asked if his team could score goals and win games without the trio, Bruce replied: ‘We’re going to have to if that is the case, we’re going to have to find a way.

‘Our top goalscorer last year only scored six goals and we managed to find a way and get some results.

‘It’s been pretty brutal to us in that respect to our big players, so we’ll have to get on with it and accept it and take on the challenge.’
