Facebook to start directing climate news readers to visit its ‘Information Center’

Facebook will start weighing in on climate-related news posts by directing readers to visit its own “Climate Science Information Center,” the media giant announced Thursday.

Labels directing climate-story readers to the newly expanded information center will be rolled out first in the U.K., and will help fight the misinformation that finds its way onto the site, Facebook said.

The labels are in addition to Facebook’s fact-checker flagging of climate change misinformation, and will be expanded to more countries soon, including the U.S.

The Climate Science Information Center promises advice “from the world’s leading climate change organizations,” including from George Mason University, the Yale Program on Climate Change Communication and the University of Cambridge.

The platform already annotates posts related to elections and COVID-19.
