Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has shed light on his management approach, admitting he ‘can be a shouter’ and does not try hard to be loved by his players.

Tuchel, 47, has made an impressive since taking over from Frank Lampard last month, with four wins from his opening five games and only one goal conceded.

The former Borussia Dortmund and Paris Saint-Germain manager arrived at Stamford Bridge with a reputation as a tough taskmaster after fall-outs at previous clubs, and has made it clear he prefers an honest approach with players rather than trying to be liked.

‘Just because I’m trying hard to be kind to you guys [the media], does not mean that I am trying too hard and that everybody loves me in the dressing room because this simply does not exist,’ Tuchel said in an interview with Sky Sports.

‘Can I be a shouter? Yeah, of course, if it’s absolutely necessary. But I can be totally emotional, and I can also totally be a shouter if I feel this is the minute to do it and to surprise. If you do it all the time then no one would listen because it becomes a habit, so everybody gets used to it.

‘The goal is also to stay a little bit unpredictable, and most of the time to be reasonable because, for me, it is important we build a trust and relationship that we can rely on.

‘I believe strongly that everybody has to have the personality to swallow criticism in front of the group.

‘That way no harm is done because we can talk openly. To be clear and to be honest, this will never change. I don’t do stuff to be loved by everyone in the dressing room, this is not possible.’

This no nonsense approach was certainly on show after Chelsea’s most recent display, publicly saying his players lacked ‘courage’ and ‘rhythm’ in their narrow 1-0 FA Cup win over Championship side Barnsley.

Tuchel has overseen several changes since taking over from predecessor Lampard, handing second chances to previously exiled players while seeming to favour more experienced players.

Marcos Alonso and Antonio Rudiger have been brought back into the side, while previous Lampard favourites Reece James and Ben Chilwell have seen their game time reduced somewhat.

Tuchel revealed a ‘talk’ had taken place with £50million signing Chilwell after anxiety over losing his place in the side, with the German insisting the left-back has to place his ‘trust’ in him.

A switch to a back three has seen Chelsea find a new-found resilience, but narrow wins over Sheffield United and Barnsley saw some sections of the fanbase label Tuchel’s playing style ‘boring’.
