The CBI’s former boss has joined the board of BAE.

Dame Carolyn Fairbairn, who was director general of the business lobby group for five years until last year, will join the defence group in March as the firm attempts to bounce back from the Covid pandemic.

BAE, which makes Typhoon fighter jets, combat vehicles and nuclear submarines, also appointed science-focused investment manager Ewan Kirk as a director.

Fairbairn, a mother of three, has already held director positions at a vast array of businesses and was a director of the Competition and Markets Authority and the Financial Services Authority, the predecessor to the current City watchdog, the Financial Conduct Authority.

The former interim boss of the FCA Chris Woolard is set to join accountancy firm EY.

Woolard, who took over at the watchdog last year after Andrew Bailey left to become the Bank of England governor, will lead EY’s financial services regulatory team across Europe, the Middle East, India and Africa.
