Chadwick Boseman makes history for record number of SAG nominations

Chadwick Boseman makes history as the first actor to receive four SAG nods in a single year… six months after he passed away

The late Chadwick Boseman made history on Thursday becoming the first actor to receive four SAG nominations in a single year. 

Receiving SAG nods for Best Actor in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom, Best Supporting Actor in Da 5 Bloods and dual Outstanding Ensemble nominations in both films, Boseman has posthumously set a new record. 

The Black Panther star tragically passed in August following a private four year battle with colon cancer at the age of 43.

In addition to SAG nominations for his roles in the Netflix films, he also received his first Golden Globe nomination for Best Actor in Ma Rainey’s Black Bottom. 

Gracing the screen as overly confident trumpeter Levee in the movie about influential jazz singer Ma Rainey (played by Viola Davis), he tragically passed while the film was in post-production. 

In Da 5 Bloods, Boseman plays Stormin a fallen squad leader in The Vietnam War whose remains are sought after by four veterans decades later. 

News of Chadwick’s death hit Hollywood like a ton of bricks after he opted to continue acting in both films during and in between secret chemotherapy treatments.

Never once letting on that he was sick to anyone other than his family, Boseman was a true soldier who acted until his last breath. 

Director Spike Lee spoke about Boseman’s role in Da 5 Bloods after his death as he told Variety, ‘I didn’t know Chad was sick. He did not look well, but my mind never took that he had cancer.’

‘I understand why Chadwick didn’t tell me because he didn’t want me to take it easy. If I had known, I wouldn’t have made him do the stuff. And I respect him for that.’  

Davis reflected on her time working alongside Boseman in an ET interview as she said: 

‘There was nothing about Chadwick that was anything other than a life force, that was anything other than bringing his utmost to the work. The dedication. The integrity. It’s hard for me to see his life tragically. It just really is. He’s one of those people you meet every once in a lifetime that are focused on every single moment. Every single moment is intentional.’

His camp announced his passing on Twitter as they said his 2016 stage III colon cancer diagnosis had progressed to stage IV, and ultimately claimed his life. 

Another posthumous record for Boseman, it remains the most ‘liked’ post in the sites history at 7.5M.  

Boseman received a SAG Award for Outstanding Performance by a Cast in a Motion Picture for Black Panther in 2019 as he said in an excerpt from his powerful speech:

‘…We knew not that we’d be around during awards season or that it would make a billion dollars, but we knew that we had something special that we wanted to give the world, that we could be full human beings in the roles that we were playing, that we could create a world that exemplified a world we wanted to see.’  

The actor has been hailed as a frontrunner this awards season.
