Arsenal goalkeeper Bernd Leno was sent off for a bizarre deliberate handball that saw his side go down to nine men in their chaotic defeat by Wolves.

The German joined David Luiz in players to be given their marching orders by referee Craig Pawson, as goals from Ruben Neves and Joao Moutinho earned a 2-1 victory for the home side.

With Arsenal chasing the game in the final 15 minutes having thrown away a 1-0 lead, any hope of getting a result vanished as Leno came rushing out of his goal but appeared to misjudge the ball’s bounce.

The result was Arsenal’s No 1 jumping up and sticking out his arm to stop the ball from passing him, which the officials made no mistake in spotting straight away.

In the aftermath of the game which saw Arsenal’s seven game unbeaten run in the league come to a disastrous end, BT Sport pundit Ferdinand did not hold back on his thoughts after the ‘keeper’s mistake.

Ferdinand said: ‘With Leno, there are zero excuses for him.

‘He’s misjudged the bounce of the ball and then from there it’s just comedy.’

Fellow pundit Glenn Hoddle attempted to explain the error, saying ‘He was in two minds and what was going through his mind I don’t think anyone will know. But he’s just got to play safe, he’s the last man, he always is as a goalie.

‘Head it out, knock it out with your chest, do something.

‘He’s got caught in two minds and it was disastrous for Arsenal because they should have wrapped the game up in the first half an hour.’

The 28-year-old was replaced by deputy Runar Runarsson, who is likely to take his place in their next match agains Aston Villa as Leno serves his suspension with new signing Mat Ryan not expected to be fit in time.
