Fantasy Football players with Bednarek in their team were quick to express their heartache on Twitter while others poked fun at their expense.

One user wrote: ‘Kill me’ after discovering Bednarek’s points total for the evening while another said: ‘I just want to uninstall this app now.’

Southampton finished the game with just nine men, having had Alex Jankewitz also sent off after just 79 seconds into the match.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men made them pay for their ill-discipline by hitting them for nine in an emphatic victory to move on level points with rivals City at the top of the table.

The game was as good as over by half-time as United went in four up thanks to goals from Aaron Wan-Bissaka, Marcus Rashford, Edinson Cavani and a Bednarek own goal.

And things went from bad to worse for Southampton with Martial and McTominay making it six before they were reduced to nine men with Bednarek dismissed late on.

United added gloss to the scoreline as Bruno Fernandes, Martial and Dan James all scored in the final few minutes to complete the rout.

Solskjaer heaped praise on his United players after their dominant win.

He told BT Sport: ‘We have been waiting on them (players) to show the magic and tonight was a night that they could go and enjoy,’

‘Confidence is one think but it was about the mojo and spark, the X Factor. We haven’t had too many of them where we could sit down and enjoy the football.

‘You have to take your chances in tight or open games. You never know what might be the deciding factor.

‘We know – better than anyone – what goal difference can do to you because we have lost the league on goal difference.’
