Hulu is celebrating the start of Black History Month with the launch of a brand new collection to highlight some of the most celebrated Black voices and creators in film and TV. With the introduction of their Black Stories hub, the streamer is debuting sitcoms, movies and more on their platform for the first time, including ’90s favorites like Moesha and Sister, Sister.
The Black Stories hub, which will feature collections like “LGBTQ+ Black,” “Black Leads” and “Black Creators,” will include thousands of episodes and films in total, all with Black storylines, characters and creators. Along with Moesha and Sister, Sister, Hulu is welcoming shows like Being Mary Jane, Black Ink Crew, and Love & Hip Hop: Atlanta. Hulu will also debut Janelle Monae’s Antebellum, available on streaming for the first time since its VOD release, and their own Hulu Original film, The United States vs. Billie Holiday.
Moesha, which stars Brandy in the titular role, follows a high schooler balancing her friends, family, school and relationships. The series first premiered on UPN in 1996 and ran for six seasons before wrapping up in 2001. While it’s been off the air for nearly 20 years now, the show has only grown more popular over the years, building up a following of both old and new fans. And now that it’s on Hulu, it’ll be opened up to a whole new generation of Moesha fans.
“I am so happy that Moesha will be seen on Hulu,” Sheryl Lee Ralph, who starred as Dee Mithchell on Moesha, said. “It’s such a wonderfully well-written, well-acted sitcom. The clothes, the music of Moesha. After all these years, it’s the kind of series that still holds up so well and I know a new generation of watchers are going to love Moesha. Mo to the, E to the, Moesha!”
Moesha co-creator and Family Matters writer Sara Finney-Johnson added, “I’m thrilled that Moesha will be streaming on Hulu. My dream of telling the story of a Black teenage girl became a reality when Moesha was launched 25 years ago. It was a voice I felt was missing on television,” she continued. “Along with my Co-Creators, Ralph Farquhar and Vida Spears, we set out to use that voice and tell stories that were rooted in our culture but were also universal in theme. Having the image of a beautiful, complicated, smart and strong Black girl on television was also important to us. Representation matters and I hope we represented Black girls well.”
Sister, Sister, another exciting Hulu addition, stars twins Tia Mowry and Tamera Mowry-Housley. The series, which follows the lives of two sisters separated at birth and reunited as teens, ran for five years from 1994-1999. Jackee Harry, who starred as Lisa Landry on the series, said, “What a thrill it is to know that Sister, Sister is coming to Hulu and continues to remain popular and loved by audiences even after all these years…. It was a joy to be part of such a special show where we really were like a family and consider each other the same… so wonderful to see future generations loving it! Who knew!”
Hulu’s Black Stories hub will also feature favorites like Power, Tyler Perry’s The Have and The Have Nots, Scandal and Hulu Original Wu Tang: The American Saga, along with Grown-Ish, The Bernie Mac Show, Living Single and films like The Nutty Professor and Selma. While Hulu is launching the new collection today, the hub will be available to viewers throughout the year.
