Three people are in critical condition following an explosion on a movie set in Santa Clarita, California.

The blast in the Rye Canyon Loop sparked a wildfire that spread to one acre before it was put out, according to local reports.

It is now known what movie was under production at the time.  

Los Angeles County Supervisor told the Santa Clarita Signal the explosion was reported just after 5pm local time.

Responding units found a quarter-acre brush fire running uphill. The blaze, dubbed the Rye Fire, was stopped by 5.20pm local time at one acre.

The three victims were brought to Henry Mayo Hospital with second and third degree burns.  

‘Three burn victims are all being transported to a local trauma center with additional injuries,’ said Supervisor Ed Pickett.  

‘We don’t know what caused it, and we are doing an investigation right now.’

According to CBS Los Angeles, the initial blast had been caused by a ‘pyrotechnic malfunction’.   

Locals said that the apparent explosion on the movie set had felt like an earthquake. 

‘I was just working from home … and there was this loud boom, and I thought it felt (as) if something were to have hit your house, like a crane or something weird,’ resident Amy Mader told Santa Clara Signal. 

‘I felt it through the walls.’

She said that a neighbor had alerted her to the flames on the nearby hill. 

‘There were helicopters everywhere, just low flying … and dropping water,’ she added. ‘I think they got the fire put out pretty fast.’

Aerial TV news footage showed fire crews at a large lot with multiple cargo containers. 

The location of the incident matches that of the Southern California Innovation Park. 

It is a popular movie lot filming location, according to the Santa Clarita Film Office website. 

Sheriff’s officials advised residents to stay clear of the area about 30 miles north of downtown Los Angeles.
