Speaking to media including Express.co.uk, creator Dan Sefton hailed the strong writing team for coming up with the diverse stories featured in this series.

He explained how writers were encouraged to bring their ideas and style to the table with the whole team shaping it to fit the series.

Sefton explained: “The main thing is making sure the show maintains its voice but also having different things. I think what’s been great this year is that people have come in with different ideas.”

Among the stories and ideas explored this year will be the #MeToo Movement and the Spanish Civil War.

The first outing featured 10 instalments and there were originally intended to be the same number for the second run.

If The Mallorca Files gets a third series then perhaps the unused episodes from this season could form the basis of the next one.

Star Rhys reflected on the pandemic affecting filming, saying: “It’s hit everybody, hasn’t it?

“We’re very, very pleased and very lucky to have six episodes to show.”

She continued: “Filming each episode as a whole rather than filming bits of each episode means that we had six whole episodes in the can.”

Sefton went on to explain the show is filmed in blocks of two in the order they were going to be be broadcast, which meant it held together as a series.

Additionally, the nature of the self-contained episodes meant the series could be rounded off naturally without any major cliffhangers.

The writer teased: “We still have some amazing stuff to do. I’m very pleased we were able to get six out but I’m also quite sad because we had some great new writers as well who were having their first broadcast episode in that four.

“So there’s some sadness that some great material is still waiting.”

The Mallorca Files season 2 starts on BBC One from February 1 at 1.45pm and all episodes will be available on BBC iPlayer afterwards
