Liverpool dealt Dayot Upamecano blow after two-and-a-half-hour transfer meeting

Liverpool, Chelsea and Manchester United have all been dealt a major blow in the race to sign RB Leipzig centre-back Dayot Upamecano, following a meeting between the player’s entourage and Bayern Munich. The Frenchman is attracting interest from a number of Big Six Premier League clubs, who look set to battle it out for his services this summer.

Upamecano’s release clause, believed to be worth around £36million, comes into play next summer.

Leipzig have already accepted that the player is set to move on at the end of the season.

Now the 22-year-old appears to be edging closer to a move to European champions Bayern Munich, who have moved quickly to gain a headstart in negotiations.

The club’s sporting director Hasan Salihamidzic held a two-and-a-half-hour meeting with Upamecano’s representatives.

JUST IN: The four centre-backs Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp could sign before transfer deadline

Leipzig will not entertain the idea of selling Upamecano this month, unless they receive an astronomic offer.

Jurgen Klopp is deemed to consider him the “perfect” addition to his squad but the Reds are now fighting a losing battle.

Liverpool are in the market for a centre-back before Monday’s transfer deadline but they are currently looking at a stopgap deal.

The Reds could return for Upamecano though this summer and according to Fabrizio Romano, he is not the only Leipzig defender on their radar.

According to transfer expert Fabrizio Romano, Klopp believes Leipzig stalwart Upamecano would be the “perfect” signing, however, his team-mate Konate is another option that is under consideration.

“Liverpool are interested in both [Upamecano and Konate],” the transfer expert told Anfield Watch.

“For sure, Konate has been scouted. The dream would be Upamecano also for Liverpool. He would be perfect in the opinion of Jurgen Klopp.

“But, at the moment, it is so difficult. There is Bayern Munich [interested in Upamecano]. There is also Chelsea looking at him and Paris Saint-Germain.

“When you have these kind of clubs and you have to negotiate with the player more than with RB Leipzig because you are paying the [release] clause.

“It is just up to the player and offering a big salary, this is not so easy.”
