The Serpent: What happened to Angela in The Serpent? Where is she now?

“That was amazing to fill that in those like visual gaps, I suppose.

“Also, she was able to tell me what it was like living in Thailand at that time and then also, she talked more about Herman and her relationship.

“She’s like a real strong character within the story, she really, really doesn’t lose her sense of self throughout.”

From 1995 to 1999, the real Angela held a managerial position in the United Nations Department of Public Information and launched the UN website in all official UN languages.

She then went on to hold numerous positions at the United Nations including Principal Officer for Political Affairs in the Office of former Secretary-General Boutros Boutros-Ghali and as political adviser to the Personal Representative of the Secretary-General for the Central American Peace Process to end the conflict in El Salvador.

Angela also worked in several UN missions and served as Assistant Secretary-General for General Assembly and Conference Management.

In 2012 she rose to the position of UN High Representative for Disarmament Affairs and was tasked with conducting the chemical weapons investigation in Syria in 2013.

Angela also served as Under-Secretary-General for Management at the UN between 2008 and 2012.

She also served twice in the Department of Political Affairs as Director and Assistant Secretary-General.

In 2015, Angela received the Order of Merit of the Federal Republic of Germany and in 2016 was awarded the Grand Decoration of Honour in Gold with Star High Award from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Austria.

Angela was appointed by the United Nations Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon and Director-General Irina Bokova of the United Nations Educational Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) to the governing council of the United Nations University and in 2019, was appointed Chair of the UNU Council.

She also holds various positions outside of the UN, including Vice President, International Institute for Peace and Advisory Fellow at the Foreign Policy Association.
