‘I just thought something was wrong’: Pete Davidson recalls his RELIEF at being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder

Pete Davidson recalled being diagnosed with Borderline Personality Disorder in a recent interview.

The 27-year-old SNL funnyman sat down with Glenn Close for Variety’s Actors on Actors series where he spoke about the relief he felt upon receiving an accurate diagnosis in 2017.

‘I was always just so confused all the time, and just thought something was wrong and didn’t know how to deal with it,’ he shared.

He continued to say that finally understanding his condition and getting a proper diagnosis gave him a sense of ease.

‘When somebody finally tells you, the weight of the world feels lifted off your shoulders. You feel so much better.’

He struggled for years with finding the right doctors to work with and had heard of the diagnosis before.

‘One of my psychiatrists [diagnosed me]. He was always saying before this big meltdown, “You’re probably bipolar or borderline, we’re just going to have to figure it out”.’

Confusion: 'I was always just so confused all the time, and just thought something was wrong and didn't know how to deal with it,' he told Close

In a 2017 interview on WTF With Marc Maron, he explained that before the diagnosis, he checked himself into a rehab facility in 2016 after he thought his marijuana use was triggering mental problems.

‘I started having these mental breakdowns where I would, like, freak out and then not remember what happened after. Blind rage.’

‘They told me there, they’re like, “You might be bipolar,” and I was like, “OK.” So they’re like, “We’re gonna try you on these meds.” And then I got out [of rehab], and then I started smoking weed again — and I’m on meds,’ he said.

After exiting the facility he confessed that he ‘snapped’ and decided to cut out the drug completely from his life, but months later he found himself struggling which is when he found out once and for all that he had BPD.

He said that the symptoms of his disorder leaves him ‘depressed all the time,’ but he is slowly getting a handle on everything. ‘It is working, slowly but surely.’

‘I’ve been having a lot of problems. This whole year has been a f***ing nightmare. This has been the worst year of my life, getting diagnosed with this and trying to figure out how to learn with this and live with this.’ he told Maron.

In a 2020 interview with Charlamagne Tha God he confessed, ‘I wake depressed, but now I know my steps. I have to go outside and be in sun for a little bit, or go for a walk. It’s all just programming yourself to trick your brain.’

The comedian lost his firefighter father in the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks which he said definitely played a part in his mental health. ‘One day he was here and the next day he was gone.’

Davidson also told Charlamagne he has contemplated suicide, before saying ‘I can’t, because I’ve got a mom and a sister and a family.’
