Lucky has also grown four teeth in that time while sporting 18-centimetre (seven-inch) long upper limbs that were 14 centimetres (5.5 inches) in length when he was born.

Lucky was said to be the country’s first birth of a siamang by caesarean section as well as the first of its kind to be born at the Nanjiang zoo.

Lucky’s mother, Purba, fell pregnant last year after mating with Lucky’s father, Bobi, according to a statement by the zoo.

After more than seven months of gestation, Purba’s estimated date of delivery drew near as the zookeepers paid close attention to monitor the expectant mother.

On the morning of December 27, a staff member noticed a protuberance that appeared to look like ‘a small arm’ in Purba’s lower body, a sign that the siamang is about to give birth with an abnormal fetal position.

Purba’s delivery was particularly challenging as siamangs have arms longer than their legs, a characteristic causing the complication with Lucky’s birth.

A group of veterinary professionals were called to the zoo to assist the operation while the zookeepers prepared for isolation, midwifery and a possible birth by caesarean section.

The team decided to carry out a C-section after first trying to correct the fetal position – but the attempt failed due to Lucky’s lengthy arms.

After a 70-minute operation, Lucky was delivered successfully. Both mother and son were out of danger.

Following his birth, the baby gibbon has been living in an incubator while being given round-the-clock care.

As Purba struggles to produce a sufficient amount of breast milk, Lucky is mainly fed with milk powder, according to the zoo.
