Transgender star Elliot Page has filed for divorce from their wife Emma Portner, less than two months after the Umbrella Academy actor publicly came out as trans and non-binary, and received a public show of support from their spouse.
Elliot, 33, has filed legal documentation with a court in Manhattan seeking to dissolve their three-year marriage to the 26-year-old professional dancer, who ‘proudly’ supported her partner’s decision to come out as transgender back in December.
In a statement made to DailyMail.com, Elliot and Emma revealed that they actually ‘separated last summer’, before the actor came out as transgender, and have now decided to make the split official.
‘After much thought and careful consideration, we have made the difficult decision to divorce following our separation last summer,’ the statement said. ‘We have the utmost respect for each other and remain close friends.’

Moving on: Elliot (pictured in their most recent Instagram post), 33, tied the knot with Emma in a secret ceremony at the start of 2018, six months after their relationship was made public
Before releasing a statement, Emma and Elliot removed all images of one another from their respective Instagram accounts in what appeared to be a very clear message about the future of their marriage.
Elliot and Emma are still following one another on the social media app however.
Broadway Dance Center trainer Emma has only just returned to Instagram after temporarily deleting her account in the wake of Elliot’s coming out. Shortly before disappearing form the app, she made a public plea for ‘patience and privacy’, and noted that her own ‘gender identity, pronouns, and sexuality’ are ‘private and not up for debate’.
Elliot last addressed the public in a statement shared on their Instagram account on December 20, when the actor thanked their fans for their support over their decision to come out.
‘From the bottom of my heart, thank you,’ Elliot wrote, while sharing an image of themselves posing in a black hoodie and wire-framed glasses.
‘Your love and support has been the greatest gift. Stay safe. Be there for each other.’
In control: 26-year-old Emma made a plea for privacy in the wake of Elliot’s announcement, and soon after, she deleted her Instagram account, although it has since been reactivated
Deleted: A source told DailyMail.com that Emma chose to delete her Instagram account after becoming overwhelmed with the influx of comments about Elliot’s coming out
Emma has shared a handful of posts on her account since reactivating it early in the new year, however she has not addressed her relationship with Elliot, instead sharing two dance videos, and two tongue-in-cheek selfies that see her posing with a potato.
Despite removing images of Elliot from her Instagram, Emma still has a copy of the actor’s coming out statement posted on her account, along with the statement of support and pride she shared at the time it was released.
In the post, she wrote: ‘I am so proud of @elliotpage. Trans, queer and non-binary people are a gift to this world.
‘I also ask for patience & privacy [and] that you join me in the fervent support of trans life every single day. Elliot’s existence is a gift in and of itself. Shine on sweet E. Love you so much.’
She also commented on Elliot’s Instagram post, writing: ‘Love you so much elliot.’
A source told DailyMail.com that Emma chose to delete her Instagram account in the days after Elliot came out, after becoming overwhelmed with the influx of hateful comments targeted at the Juno actor in the wake of their statement.
Evolution in public: Elliot publicly came out as gay in 2014, and reports first surfaced that the star was dating Emma in 2017, six months before they wed
Emotional: Reports that the couple are divorcing come less than two months after Emma offered public words of support for her spouse, writing, ‘Shine on sweet E. Love you so much’
Clarification: She later made clear on Instagram that her own ‘gender identity, pronouns, and sexuality are private and not up for debate’
Elliot and Emma have been together since 2017, and they wed in a secret ceremony in early 2018.
They kept their nuptials very much under wraps, with Elliot sharing the surprise news with their fans in an Instagram post shared on January 3 of that year.
‘Can’t believe I get to call this extraordinary woman my wife. @emmaportner,’ the actor wrote at the time, while sharing images of the duo posing together – as well as a photo of their wedding rings.
Emma shared the same pictures on her own account, while writing: ‘I get to call this incredible woman MY WIFE! I LOVE YOU!’
Throughout their relationship, the couple kept their romance closely guarded, appearing together at a handful of events, and sharing a few photos together on social media – although those have now been deleted.
In one of their more candid moments, Elliot and Emma posted together for a topless photo that the Juno star posted in celebration of Pride Month 2019.

Under wraps: The couple has been fairly private throughout their relationship, but shared this revealing romantic shot on social media in celebration of Pride Month 2019
Prior to their relationship, Juno star Elliot dated artist Samantha Thomas for 18 months; it was reported that they had split just a few months before Elliot tied the knot with Emma.
Elliot came out publicly as gay in 2014 in an emotional speech at the Human Rights Campaign’s Time to Thrive conference for LGTBQ youth.
In the speech, the actor shared that they hoped the news would help others struggling with their sexuality, saying: ‘I’m here today because I am gay. And because maybe I can make a difference.’
Three years later, in November 2017, Elliot accused X-Men director Brett Ratner of outing them as gay on set, when the actor was just 18.
The Juno actor made the allegations in a lengthy Facebook post, in which they also revealed that they had been fondled by a director and sexually assaulted by a crew member when they were 16.
According to Elliot, Ratner outed them during a cast and crew meet-and-greet for X-Men: The Last Stand, where he urged a woman to have sex with the actor.
‘He looked at a woman standing next to me, ten years my senior, pointed to me and said: “You should f*** her to make her realize she’s gay,”‘ Elliot claimed.
Coming out: Elliot took to Twitter on December 1 to publicly share the news that they are transgender and non-binary
Changes: Elliot also updated their social media accounts, changing the usernames, and adding a new profile picture to Twitter and Instagram
Looking ahead: The actor is preparing to begin filming for the third season of Netflix hit The Umbrella Academy, and insiders have revealed he will continue to play female violinist Vanya
Breakthrough: Elliot first found fame for starring as a pregnant teenager in the hit 2007 movie Juno, for which they earned an Oscar nomination
‘I was a young adult who had not yet come out to myself. I knew I was gay, but did not know, so to speak. I felt violated when this happened.’
They continued: ‘He “outed” me with no regard for my well-being, an act we all recognize as homophobic.
‘…This public, aggressive outing left me with long standing feelings of shame, one of the most destructive results of homophobia.’
Although Elliot shot to global fame when they starred as the titular character in hit indie flick Juno in 2007, they have since gone on to achieve huge success on the big and small screens, most recently as one of the main stars of Netflix series Umbrella Academy.
The actor is due to begin filming the third series of the show in Canada in February, after producers confirmed that they would continue playing the role of female violinist Vanya Hargreaves.
In the second season of the show, Vanya fell in love with a woman, and Elliot praised the decision to explore the character’s queerness in an interview with Pride, saying: ‘…Getting to play her falling in love for the first time and the beauty of that and the joy of that and then hoping to be mindful and sensitive in terms of how to represent the other aspects and mostly, I’m just happy that a storyline like this is in a show that has the reach that it does.’
