Joe Biden inauguration: What religion is Joe Biden? What will he swear on?

Joe Biden’s inauguration ceremony begins at 12pm tomorrow, where he will assume the presidency. Congress recently impeached outgoing President Donald Trump – whose first and only term ends at 11.59.59am ET time – for the second time, and could soon bar him from holding office again. Mr Biden’s arrival at the White House will begin with a swearing-in ceremony, where an incoming President takes an oath of office.

What religion is Joe Biden?

Much like many Americans, Joe Biden puts great stock in both his faith and ancestry.

Mr Biden is of French, Irish and English descent, with an Irish great-grandfather on his mother’s side and English third great-grandfather.

The President-Elect is a Roman Catholic who regularly attends church with his wife in Delaware.

Mr Biden’s faith allegedly plays a “foundational” role in his identity, according to Delaware Democrat Senator Chris Coons.

He said: “Joe’s faith isn’t just part of who he is. It’s foundational to who he is.”

Another close friend of the former, Father Kevin O’Brien, said his faith takes several forms.

He told CNN: “For Joe, faith is both a private devotion — he prays regularly, he goes to church.

What will Joe Biden use to swear the oath of office?

As part of Mr Biden’s inauguration tomorrow, he will have to swear the oath of office.

The swearing-in ceremony requires an incoming President to place their hand on a book, traditionally a bible, and swear an oath.

The oath reads as follows: “I do solemnly swear (or affirm) that I will faithfully execute the Office of President of the United States, and will to the best of my ability, preserve, protect and defend the Constitution of the United States.”

Chief Justice John Roberts will guide the President-Elect through the process, with a family heirloom.

Mr Biden will swear his oath of office with a hand on a 127-year-old family bible held by his wife, Jill Biden.

Speaking to Stephen Colbert, he said the five-inch-thick bible had “been a family heirloom on the Biden side of the family, and every important date is in there.”

He added: “For example, every time I’ve been sworn in for anything, the date has been on that and is inscribed on the Bible.”
