One British ex-pat was fuming after he was told he couldn’t cross the border from Gibraltar to Spain with his Peri-Peri sauce. Expat Joseph Lathey was denied the ability to cross with his medium hot sauce, because it contained processed chemicals. Mr Lathey, who lives in Spain, was also told to throw out his samosas, flatbreads, and various spices.
He was given the option of binning the items or take them back to Gibraltar, reports The Sun.
The 27-year-old then had to go back to Gibraltar and sell his items.
Mr Lathey lives across the border in La Línea de la Concepción, in Spain.
The British expat showed his items to the border guard “as a courtesy”.
Mr Lathey added: “He just started pulling stuff out and said ‘no, no, no, no… but you can have these two things,’ and pulled out two bags of spice that I had and said ‘that’s the only things that you can keep’.”
He was angry as he could only keep £6 worth of his £43 shop.
Mr Lathey added: “The border police wanted to take the samosas, because they said it had processed vegetables in it.
“There was a bag of cloves, chilli powder, some teriyaki rib rub or something like that, and the flatbread.
“The Peri-Peri Nando’s sauce was in there, too.
“It had onion puree on the ingredients and that’s one of the things they said to me: ‘look, it’s got processed vegetables on it, you can’t have it’.”
