Snapchat latest tech firm to ban Trump’s account in wake of Capitol riot

Snapchat is ghosting President Trump.

The messaging app banned the president’s account on Wednesday, joining other tech firms who have moved to curb Trump’s posting since a mob of his supporters breached the US Capitol last week.

Snapchat said it decided to indefinitely suspend the account “in the interest of public safety, and based on his attempts to spread misinformation, hate speech, and incite violence.”

Several companies have limited the president’s online activities in the wake of the deadly Jan. 6 riot, including Twitter, which permanently banned his account.

Facebook and Instagram blocked him at least until the end of his term, and online shopping platform Shopify pulled Trump stores off its platform.

On Wednesday, Google-owned YouTube also said it had suspended Trump’s channel for at least a week amid concerns over “ongoing potential for violence.”

Content from Trump’s channel was removed Tuesday for violating YouTube’s policies and over concerns it would incite violence, the company said in a statement.

Under the suspension, new videos or live streams will be temporarily prevented from being uploaded, although the channel remains live.

The president was still able to issue a video message on YouTube Wednesday, using the White House account.
