Buzzfeed correspondent Christopher Miller tweeted: “Sources tell Buzzfeed ‘disgruntled staffer’ is behind the State Department site’s change of Trump and Pence’s biographies.” The official US website states: “Donald J. Trump’s term ended on 2021-01-11 19:38:51.” US secretary of state Mike Pompeo is now launching an investigation into how the biographical pages for president Trump and vice president Pence were changed on Monday.
Two Washington-based diplomats informed Buzzfeed News that a disgruntled employee at the US State Department had changed the end dates of the current president and vice president to say their term was coming to an end on Monday.
This would be nine days before president-elect Joe Biden is inaugurated.
The changes made to each of the pages on the official website state, “Donald J. Trump’s term ended on 2021-01-11 19:49:00″ and “Michael R. Pence’s term ended on 2021-01-11 19:44:22″.
Investigating the incident could be a challenge the diplomats admitted.
This is because many people have the administrative rights to access to the content management system that edits the webpages on the site.
One of the diplomats told BuzzFeed News that it is a “closed system” that is “nearly impossible to hack”.
Washington based US diplomats have been signing two dissent cables condemning Mr Trump in recent days.
The cables claim he encouraged the storming of the US Capitol last week.

One of the cables aimed a rebuke at US Secretary of State Pompeo for his “failure to issue a statement unequivocally acknowledging that President-Elect Biden won the 2020 election” and protested the “President’s incitement of insurrectionist violence against the United States.”
Twitter users are now suggesting the doctored web pages have been hacked and an autonomous code is changing the biographies of the president and vice-president repeatedly.
One Twitter user, referring to the changing timestamp beside the doctored biographies said: “It’s likely a timestamp that is auto-generated each time the page is cached.
“And the page may have its cache timeout every five minutes or so.”
Twitter users noticed the changes just before 3 pm US Eastern Time, and within an hour, both pages were rendered inaccessible.
