Queen of the South spoilers: Guero's death foreshadowed by Teresa's hallucinations

The return and swift death of Teresa’s long-lost boyfriend Guero Davilas in Queen of the South’s third season is one of the most tragic moments of the series so far. However, ahead of the show’s highly anticipated return to the USA Network and Netflix, one perceptive fan realised they should have seen it coming.

The dreams of Teresa Mendoza (played by Alice Braga) may have tipped fans off to a tragic death in Queen of the South long before it actually happened.

One fan spotted the revealing foreshadowing in the show’s second season, which saw Braga’s rising drug mogul face off against feared cartel boss, El Santo (Steven Baur).

Queen of the South’s second season featured Teresa’s most tense assignment yet; striking a deal with a supplier who was believed to be mad by other cartels.

For her meeting with El Santo, Teresa is joined by loyal sicarios James Valdez (Peter Gadiot) and Guero Davilas (Jon-Michael Ecker).

Though they eventually manage to strike a deal for a metric ton of cocaine, Teresa’s deal with El Santo comes with an unexpected price.

The deranged cartel leader decides to test her loyalty by demanding a human sacrifice, and gives Teresa a toxic insect to consume when she volunteers herself.

Thankfully, the poisonous bug didn’t kill her, though she experienced horrific hallucinations which took her some time to recover from.

Upon watching the second season, one observant fan realised there were a number of clues hidden in Teresa’s strange dreams which seemed to foreshadow the events of the next season.

Before committing to her powerful persona as the Queen of the South, Teresa was sorely tempted to ditch the Vargas cartel and elope with her boyfriend Guero.

Sadly, their dreams were shattered when, fleeing former boss Camila Vargas (Veronica Falcón), Guero is shot by one of her men and dies in Teresa’s arms.

Additionally, the hallucinations also hinted towards James’ strong feelings for Teresa, which he went on to admit in the following season.

The fan continued: “It ends with James kissing her which foreshadows his strong feelings for her, and Guerro shooting him (not sure how to interpret it beyond his obvious jealousy).”

“He does say afterwards that it was either him or James, and I think it foreshadows how for the near future she chooses Guero (until he dies).”

James was absent throughout most of Queen of the South’s fourth season, but his sudden return in 2019’s thrilling season finale has revived speculation about another forthcoming romance.

Fans have now been waiting for the show’s return for well over a year thanks to coronavirus delays, but the fifth season is finally in production and eyeing a release later this year.

Queen of the South seasons 1-4 are available to stream on Netflix.
