Ivanka Trump poised to step in and stop Donald Trump’s ‘final trick up his sleeve’

US Election: Ivanka Trump makes speech at rally in Wisconsin

There are just eight days left before the inauguration of Joe Biden, but the outgoing President has “something up his sleeve”, Chair of the Defence Select Committee Tobias Ellwood has warned. Ivanka, who is a senior adviser to the President, and her husband Jared Kushner, were branded as the only ones who can “talk him down from the ledge” by former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon. Last week, Trump supporters, who were riled up after a MAGA rally in Washington DC, stormed the Capitol building in a bid to overturn the result of the presidential election.

In the violence that ensued, four people died and 52 people have now been arrested.

It came just hours after Democrat candidates won both Georgia senate elections, giving the party control of Congress.

Meanwhile, Mr Trump has claimed the election was “stolen”, told the rioters “I love you” and described them as “patriots”.

The video was taken down from Twitter and Mr Trump was later permanently banned after being accused of inciting violence.

Washington DC is now under curfew, a number of top officials in the White House have quit and Nancy Pelosi has announced her intention to impeach the President for the second time.

Mr Ellwood told Express.co.uk that he is concerned Mr Trump is plotting something for his final days in office.

He said: “The fact that he is failing to share information ‒ as he is duty-bound to do ‒ suggests he has something up his sleeve and he is going to go out with a bang.

“Whether that’s connected with some formal intervention in Iran, or something else, that’s difficult to know.

“But there is enough nervousness in Washington that former defence secretaries on both sides of the aisle have collectively called it out.

“The military should not be used in any manner ‒ whether that’s domestically to stop Trump from leaving the building, or pursuing a last-ditch foreign policy which could be problematic for the incoming administration.”

The President’s daughter Ivanka was appointed as a senior adviser at the beginning of Mr Trump’s term, as was her husband Jared.

The First Daughter has a mixed reception, with some viewing her as a calming influence over her erratic father, and others seeing her as an enabler, whose glossy demeanor helps to make his harmful rhetoric more palatable.

However, former White House Chief Strategist Steve Bannon reportedly felt like Ivanka and Jared were the former.

Vicky Ward wrote about Ivanka’s influence over her father in the book ‘Kushner Inc’.

When Mr Trump wanted his daughter as an adviser, there was concern among officials that her influence was too powerful, because he found it hard to say “no” to her.

Mr Trump’s former lawyer Michael Cohen for one felt it might give her too much power.

However, Mr Bannon argued that they needed the couple to “talk him down from the ledge” sometimes.

She claimed Mr Bannon said: “I think we might need [Ivanka and Jared].

“Our craziest moments of the campaign, the real craziest moments, even Hope [Hicks] can’t get to Trump.

“Only Jared and Ivanka can talk him down from the ledge.

We’re going to have so many of those.

“We’re going to need Jared, to be able to talk with him like a son-in-law, Ivanka.

“I think we need that. I think it’ll be worth it.”

If Mr Bannon’s assessment was correct, Ivanka’s role may be pivotal in the next few days in calming him down and preventing whatever it is he has “up his sleeve”.
