Speaking to Canale 5, in an interview that will air Sunday, Pope Francis said he was “amazed” at the violence on Wednesday as he regards the US as “so disciplined in Democracy.”
He said even in “the most mature reality, there is always something that doesn’t work, people who take a path against the community, against democracy and against the common good”.
The Pope went on to state violence “must always be condemned, regardless of those who perpetrate.
“Thank God this exploded, so it can be seen, so it can be remedied.”
Pope Francis called on the US to “learn from history” and called it a question of “understanding, so as not to repeat” the events that led to the riots.
He added; “Violence is always like this, isn’t it?
“No population can boast of not having one day a case of violence. It happens in history.
“But we must understand well, so as not to repeat it, learn from history, learn that groups…that are not well integrated into society, sooner or later will have these eruptions of violence.”
Five Americans died following the Washington DC riot on Wednesday, including one police officer.
Trump supporters stormed the Capitol building as Congress attempted to certify the results of the US election, where Democrat Joe Biden beat President Donald Trump by 306 electoral college seats to 232.
At a Save America rally near the Capitol building, Mr Trump told his supporters the election was “stolen” by the Democrats, and added: “After this, we’re going to walk down and I’ll be there with you. We’re going to walk down.”
Democrats, Republicans and leading business groups have accused the President of inciting the violence, and have called for him to be removed from office.
The Pope has previously questioned Mr Trump’s faith in Christianity 2016, when flying back from Mexico.
He said to reporters at the airport: “A person who thinks only about building walls, wherever they may be, and not of building bridges, is not Christian. This is not in the Gospel.
“As far as what you said about whether I would advise to vote or not to vote, I am not going to get involved in that.
“I say only that this man is not Christian if he said things like that.”
Pope Francis also said in the interview with Canale 5 choosing to be vaccinated against coronavirus is “ethical”.
He added: “I believe that ethically everyone should take the vaccine. It is an ethical choice because you are gambling with your health, with your life, but you are also gambling with the lives of others.”
The Pope expressed his hopes everyone will get the jab to protect lives, and shared he signed up to be vaccinated in the coming weeks.
Pope Francis, 84, had part of one lung removed during an illness as a young man in Argentina, making him potentially vulnerable to the disease.
