Microsoft Dismantled a PS2 To Help Develop the First Xbox

I’m really confused. The PS2 came out in 2000, the Xbox came out in 2001… I am almost certain it takes much longer than a year or two to plan out and develop an entire console. Doesn’t R&D already take a few years at least? Not to mention the actual development and production?

I’m wondering if they were already developing for years but the PS2 teardown was specifically to figure out how best to fit the Xbox into a consumer-friendly architecture. It talks about how they priced out the parts and checked how many screws. So maybe this was just for guidance on the physical parts, not necessarily for the development of the console.
