Dramatic moment speeding car disintegrates as it hits US border barrier from Mexico

Moment speeding car smashes through US border barrier from Mexico – instantly killing the California driver, 27, and nearby disabled vendor, 49

  • The 27-year-old male driver of the car was pronounced dead at the scene
  • A wheelchair bound woman, described as a vendor was later pronounced dead
  • Driving a gray sedan, the man crashed into a metal barrier as he attempted to cross into the US in a closed lane at the San Ysidro Port of Entry last Tuesday
  • Moments prior, he also struck a man, 70, on the Mexican side of the border

A speeding car has been filmed almost disintegrating as it hit the United States border in footage from the crash that killed the driver and a disabled vendor.

The 27-year-old male motorist from Santa Ana, California, was pronounced dead at the scene after crashing into a metal barrier as he attempted to cross into the US in a closed lane at the San Ysidro Port of Entry just after 2pm local time last Tuesday.

Security footage shows the moment his car is reduced to a wreck after striking to two vendors on the Mexico side of the port – a 49-year-old woman, who was in a wheelchair and who later died and a 70-year-old man, who suffered minor injuries.

It remains unclear whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the smash. Neither the driver or the two victims have been named by authorities.

The gray Hyundai sedan can be seen at first driving through lanes of stationary traffic as pedestrians run for safety.

The footage then cuts to the car speeding down a closed lane before hitting the metal barrier and coming to a stop.

A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol (CHP) confirmed to DailyMail.com that the driver was pronounced dead at the scene.

Additional footage uploaded to social media showed the crushed sedan surrounded by police near to the gates leading into the US.

Because the two victims were struck on Mexican soil and the driver came to a stop in the US, CHP said the incident is currently being investigated in two halves between US and Mexican police.

Tijuana police are investigating the circumstances surrounding the striking of the man and woman, while CHP is probing the crash.

A spokesperson for CHP said it’s not currently known exactly how fast the sedan was driving in the moments leading up to the crash, however said the vehicle would ‘have to be going at some speed’ to cause the ‘significant’ amount of damage the car suffered.

The San Ysidro Port has been closed since March 21 to all but ‘essential crossings’ in response to the on-going COVID-19 pandemic. The entry point is slated to remain closed until at least January 21, 2021.

Nine lanes of the border crossing were closed after the crash as several law enforcement officers surrounded the area.

Traffic was backed up in both directions as a result.

A witness to Tuesday afternoon’s crash told Telemundo that another crash occurred at the port the day prior, which he attributed to the rush for people to get home for Christmas.

‘The truth is that people are stressed and these types of accidents happen, and more at this time [of year],’ the unnamed witness said.
