Sky broadband down: Customers complain as internet issues leave many offline

Sky broadband customers appear to be having a frustrating evening with some users complaining that the popular service is offline and not currently working. The tech gremlins appear to have begun at around 5pm with the issues still ongoing almost an hour later.

Independent outage monitor Downdetector, which keeps an eye on tech outages across the world, is showing over 2,500 reports of users struggling to get online with the outage appearing to be widespread across the UK. Its live heat map reveals that the worst affected areas include London, Glasgow, Norwich and Manchester although this is yet to be confirmed.

It’s unclear what is causing the problems but Sky’s help page is currently showing no known issues with its broadband which is strange considering the high level of reports.

Although Sky seems confident that things are working perfectly, there’s plenty of chat on Twitter which shows that may not be the case.

Users are flooding to the social network to complain of the problems tonight.

One Sky customers tweeted, “No broadband in Glasgow. Can you provide a response on what is going on and an ETA for a fix?”

Whilst another said: “Internet been dropping out intermittently for last hour or so. Website not working to troubleshoot. Twitter and downdetector show UK wide issues. #skybroadband”

Although tonight’s outage won’t please users there is some better news on the horizon. Sky broadband recently confirmed that customers will finally see much faster broadband speeds arriving into their homes thanks to the rollout of the firm’s new full-fibre connection. The satellite TV company says that it is launching its Ultrafast broadband in more UK homes with over three million properties now able to access much quicker downloads.

Sky’s Ultrafast service offers speeds of around 145Mbps which more than twice as fast as the current UK average.

“Launching FTTP, the UK’s most advanced broadband technology, reflects Sky’s commitment to innovation and providing customers with the fastest and most reliable broadband possible”, said Aman Bhatti, Director of Propositions, Sky Broadband.

“This means, with Sky Broadband Ultrafast, we can offer our customers average speeds that are 12x faster than standard enabling customers to download, stream, browse, work from home and game freely.”
