QB Dwayne Haskins is released by Washington a week after violating NFL protocol with mask-less party

QB Dwayne Haskins is released by Washington a week after getting caught partying mask-less ‘with strippers’ in violation of NFL protocol

  • Dwayne Haskins was released by the Washington Football Team after it was recently revealed that he violated NFL protocol by partying without a mask
  • The team did not specifically blame Haskins’s protocol violation for his release
  • Last week, Haskins was fined $40,000 and stripped of his captaincy after pictures surfaced showing him partying mask-less with women
  • Some of the women in the pictures are reported to be strippers, but the 23-year-old has claimed that the event was a birthday party for his girlfriend
  • The former first-round pick has struggled, going just 2-5 in his seven starts this season while tossing 14 interceptions and just 12 touchdown passes

Quarterback Dwayne Haskins was released by the Washington Football Team (WFT) on Monday after it was revealed that he violated NFL pandemic protocol by attending a party without wearing a mask.

‘My time with the WFT has unfortunately come to an end,’ Haskins said in a statement on Twitter. ‘I thank the team & fans for the opportunity to play for the team I grew up rooting for.

‘I take full responsibility for not meeting the standards of a NFL QB & will become a better man & player because of this experience.’

Last week, Haskins was fined $40,000 and stripped of his captaincy after pictures surfaced showing him partying mask-less with women.

TMZ and other news outlets have reported that the women in the photos are strippers, which could not be confirmed by the Daily Mail. However, one photo shows Haskins and a woman holding stacks of bills in their hands. Haskins said the event was actually a birthday party for his girlfriend.

“This afternoon I met with Dwayne and informed him that we would be releasing him,’ Washington coach Ron Rivera said in a statement. ‘I told him that I believe it benefits both parties that we go our separate ways. We want to thank Dwayne for his contributions these last two seasons and wish him well moving forward.’

Rivera remained positive about Haskins’s future in the NFL.

“You watch his talent, and you see the arm,” Rivera said. “That’s the thing that I think is his most redeeming quality as a quarterback, which I think is probably the most important thing.”

Haskins recently apologized after the aforementioned party pictures surfaced on social media.

‘I want to publicly apologize for my actions this past Sunday,’ Haskins wrote on social media back on December 22. ‘I spoke with Coach Rivera yesterday and took full accountability for putting the team at risk.

‘It was irresponsible and immature of me and I accept responsibility for my action.’

It was his second protocol violation this season.

Rivera announced Monday that either Alex Smith, who is recovering from injury, or Taylor Heinicke will start for Washington in the regular-season finale. Despite being 6-9, the team can win the division and earn a playoff berth with a victory over the Philadelphia Eagles on Sunday night.

Rivera is ‘optimistic’ Smith will be ready to play at the Philadelphia Eagles after missing the past two games with a strained right calf. Haskins started those two games, both losses, is 1-5 this season and turned the ball over three times in a 20-13 defeat to Carolina on Sunday that saw him benched for Heinicke.

Although not as serious as the right leg injury that kept him out of the NFL for over a season, Smith's recent calf injury was serious enough to sideline him on Sunday
