Chris Wilder has revealed that Sheffield United star Sander Berge is out for up to four months

‘It’s a huge blow for us’: Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has revealed that star midfielder Sander Berge is out for ‘between three and four months’ while the suspended John Lundstram is set to leave the Blades for free at the end of the season

  • Sander Berge suffered the injury in the first half against Manchester United
  • The Norwegian arrived at Bramall Lane in January and replaced John Lundstram
  • Lundstram rejected a new contract and is set to leave for free in the summer

Sheffield United boss Chris Wilder has said that the absence of Sander Berge for ‘between three and four months’ is a ‘huge blow’.

The Norwegian, signed by the Blades in January for £22million from Genk, hobbled off in the first half of their 3-2 loss to Manchester United last week and has since had surgery on a tendon in his leg.

The South Yorkshire side have yet to register a win in the Premier League this season and are currently on two points and 10 points adrift of safety.

Berge’s teammate John Lundstram was a regular fixture in the team before being replaced by the 22-year-old in the starting XI, but he is suspended for the next three games after being sent off for a dangerous tackle on Joel Veltman in the 1-1 draw against Brighton at the Amex on Sunday.

The Liverpudlian’s current deal runs out at the end of the season and he rejected a new contract in October, but Wilder has had no qualms about the former Oxford United man’s attitude and says he has had no enquiries about the midfielder moving on in January.

Speaking ahead of the game against Everton at Bramall Lane on Boxing Day, Wilder said: ‘Of course losing Sander is a huge blow for us and John plays in that position,’ said Wilder.

‘He (Berge) has had an operation on the tendon in his leg and will be out for between three and four months.

‘There have been no enquiries for John,’ Wilder added. ‘If someone comes in, they will have to come in with a fee and we will have to assess whether it’s worth doing that or not.

‘I don’t think he will go until his contract runs down at the end of the season.’
