Ole Gunnar Solskjaer conceded he went ‘overboard with my words’ as he engaged in a touchline row with rival boss Chris Wilder in Manchester United’s win at Sheffield United.

Despite making a poor start in which they fell behind after five minutes, Solskjaer’s side rallied and returned back to Manchester with a 3-2 win after goals from Marcus Rashford and Anthony Martial.

Tensions were high in the technical area and after taking issue with a number of tackles, Solskjaer and Wilder exchanged words as they were separated by the fourth official, something Solskjaer has since apologised for.

‘It’s a proper game and like football should be,’ Solskjaer said after the win.

‘I maybe went overboard with my words and have apologised. We’ll have a drink after.’

The row exploded into life when referee Michael Oliver awarded a free-kick to Manchester United following a foul by Ethan Ampadu.

Wilder was left bemused by the decision and his reaction got a rise out of Solskjaer before match officials kept them apart.

They gesticulated wildly as they argued over decisions with Sheffield United desperately seeking an equaliser late in the game to make it 3-3.

It was a feisty affair under the lights at Bramall Lane but Wilder insists it was all above board and there were no hard feelings.

‘It’s an emotional game and we’re all there, Ole accepts that,’ he said. ‘He’s played his football under the best manager this country’s ever seen, in my opinion, so he understands we were going to be aggressive.

‘And that’s OK. There’s always an invite for a beer afterwards, it’s an incredible club we played against.

‘I’m just disappointed we had 32,000 here last season, going into the last five or 10 minutes of this game our supporters would have given us a lift. But it wasn’t to be, and Man United get three points and I wish them all the best.’

David McGoldrick, who scored twice on the night, gave the Blades an early lead following a mistake by goalkeeper Dean Henderson.

United rallied through a Rashford brace and goal from Martial before McGoldrick made it 3-2 in the second half to give Wilder’s side a chance.

Henderson made a crucial save in the closing stages on Lys Mousset to ensure the visitors took all three points in a heated 90 minutes on and off the pitch.
