Hilary Duff reveals Lizzie McGuire reboot 'isn't going to happen' amid differences at Disney+

Hilary Duff reveals Lizzie McGuire reboot ‘isn’t going to happen’ nearly one year after filming began… amid creative differences at Disney+

Hilary Duff dashed nostalgic dreams and confirmed the Lizzie McGuire reboot was officially canceled.

The 33-year-old actress wrote a lengthy post on Instagram where she revealed the Disney+ revival was just another casualty in a challenging year for many.

‘I’ve been so honored to have the character of Lizzie in my life,’ she wrote in a note to her 16million fans online. ‘She has made such a lasting impact on many, including myself. To see the fans’ loyalty and love for her, to this day, means so much to me.’

Lizzie McGuire first aired in 2001 on the Disney Channel and even received its own movie, which was released in 2003 and grossed $55million at the box office

‘I know the efforts and conversations have been everywhere trying to make a reboot work, but sadly & despite everyone’s best efforts, it isn’t going to happen,’ she added.

‘I want any reboot of Lizzie to be honest and authentic to who Lizzie would be today. It’s what the character deserves.’

While filming began last year and two episodes of the reboot were created, the show was marred by creative differences before it could ever air.

‘We can all take a moment to mourn the amazing woman she would have been and the adventures we would have taken with her,’ Hilary wrote.

‘I’m very sad, but I promise everyone tried their best and the stars just didn’t align. Hey now, this is what 2020s made of.’

When Terri Minsky walked away from the show at the beginning of the year, Disney released a statement addressing creative differences.

‘Fans have a sentimental attachment to Lizzie McGuire and high expectations for a new series,’ a Disney spokesperson said at the time. ‘After filming two episodes, we concluded that we need to move in a different creative direction and are putting a new lens on the show.’

Duff pleaded for Disney to move the show to Hulu so that viewers could see how her character evolved from a teenager to a young adult living in the city, a move made by the show Love, Simon for a similar situation.

The Hollywood Reporter revealed in March that a leaked script included ‘the existence of sex with cheating as a central plot point,’ which could have been the reason why Disney wanted to use a PG rating.

‘Was incredibly excited to launch ‘Lizzie’ on D+ and my passion remains!’ she wrote . ‘However, I feel a huge responsibility to honor the fans’ relationship with LIZZIE who, like me, grew up seeing themselves in her.

‘I’d be doing a disservice to everyone by limiting the realities of a 30 year old’s journey to live under the ceiling of a PG rating,’ she continued. ‘It’s important to me that just as her experience as a preteen / teenager navigating her life were authentic, her next chapters are equally as real and relatable.’

‘It would be a dream if Disney would let us move the show to Hulu, if they were interested, and I could bring this beloved character to life again,’ she added.
