Ex-Aussie PM sparks furious backlash over Brexit deal meddling: 'Stick you nose out!'

Brexit negotiations have been logjammed for so long that Prime Minister Boris Johnson has warned the UK could leave the single market and customs union on a so-called Australia deal. The non-agreement would effectively result in the UK trading with the bloc on World Trade Organisation (WTO) terms and facing quotas and tariffs on goods exchanged with the bloc. Former Australia Prime Minister Malcolm Turnbull insisted it would be better for the British Government to secure a deal with Brussels, but his warnings had social media users urging him to “stick your nose out.”

Commenting Mr Turbull’s interview on Good Morning Britain, one Twitter user said: “About time other countries kept their bloody noses out of the UK’s business!”

Another wrote: “Scaremongering still about Brexit leave with no deal .. moving on.”

One chimed: “The British people gave the Conservatives a huge majority to leave the EU with our sovereignty intact and that’s what will be done deal or no deal. Isn’t democracy great?”

And another said: “Why hasn’t Australia agreed to the EU’s requirements to get a tariff-free trade agreement?

“I doubt an Australian government would last 5 minutes if they ceded sovereignty to get anything.”

Mr Turnbull had noted how Australia has been negotiating with Brussels for years to ensure a free trade agreement could be rolled out to cut down on tariffs.

He said: “We want to have a deal with the EU and we have been negotiating for a free trade agreement with the European Union for several years now.

“But it’s a slow process. The reality is, what Britain has at the moment is unfettered, quota-free, tariff-free access to the European Union which is the largest free-trade zone in the world.
