Kate Garraway's husband's hospitalisation leaves 'huge pressure' on co-host Ben Shephard

Kate Garraway, 53, like many others across the country – and globe for that matter – has suffered the full wrath of coronavirus, as her husband Derek Draper, 53, remains in hospital after contracting the virus in March. After a rocky few months, the Good Morning Britain presenter announced he had kicked the disease and was on the long road to recovery, and took the time to thank everyone for all the support she and her family has received throughout this harrowing year.

Among those who have been at her side is her co-host ben Shepherd, who she admitted suffered “huge pressure” while trying to support his friend.

In a recent interview alongside her pal, Kate praised him for being there for her 24/7 during her times of need, despite the stress of his own life.

“It’s been phenomenal,” she said.

“For 20 years, Ben has had to do so much for me, but this year has been another level.

He noted that it’s the not knowing that’s the “hardest thing”, as Derek remains in hospital still fighting the after-effects of Covid-19.

“In 2021, I will undoubtedly be more optimistic and positive because of my friendship with Kate and how much I admire her,” Ben said.

Back in October, Kate told viewers that she was dreading the idea of spending Christmas without her hubby.

The 53 year old said at the time: “I feel physically sick actually.

“I can feel my chest tightening at the thought of it, and the total panic at Darcey, Bill and myself on our own at Christmas unable to visit Derek because of restrictions, and that huge emotional hole.”
