Hunter Biden case 'a big deal' as Joe Biden presidency faces crisis

The President-elect’s son, Hunter, announced last week that he is under investigation by the US Attorney’s office in Delaware for tax matters. He has reportedly been asked to provide information related to his work at the Ukrainian energy company Burisma as well as documents relating to his business dealings with China. Hunter remained defiant in a statement last week, saying: “I learned yesterday for the first time that the US Attorney’s Office in Delaware advised my legal counsel, also yesterday, that they are investigating my tax affairs.

“I take this matter very seriously but I am confident that a professional and objective review of these matters will demonstrate that I handled my affairs legally and appropriately, including with the benefit of professional tax advisers.”

As well as this, his father Joe Biden also defended Hunter.

When a reporter asked the President-elect if Hunter committed a crime, the former Vice President responded: “I’m proud of my son.”

Hunter has been the subject of attacks from Republican opponents for years, with criticism starting long before the 2020 election campaign.

And many are warning that the controversy could have a big impact on Mr Biden’s presidency as he prepares to take power in January.

Mike Sullivan, a former IRS (Internal Revenue Service) auditor who worked with US attorneys on tax cases, told Bloomberg this week: “No government agency like this is going to do this unless they have enough information to feel confident.

“DOJ doesn’t take random cases because it makes them look foolish.”

It remains unclear how far the investigators have gone or if they plan to bring an indictment.

The Department of Justice Criminal Tax Division had a 97 percent conviction rate in fiscal year 2019, according to its data.

Mr Biden has also had to endure legal challenge from the Trump campaign after they made baseless claims of voter fraud in November’s election.

But yesterday, Mr Biden’s victory was finally confirmed by the Electoral College as the President-elect condemned Mr Trump.

He said: “Once again in America, the rule of law, our constitution, and the will of the people have prevailed.

“Our democracy — pushed, tested, threatened — proved to be resilient, true, and strong.”
