A baby has died after being crushed by his mother in a horrific accident on a bus in Italy. 

The unnamed mother was holding her tiny son in a carrier across her chest when the driver slammed on the brakes at a zebra crossing in the northern city of Genoa.

She fell forward, crushing the baby between her body and a metal pole in the vehicle – leaving the infant with serious head injuries. 

He was rushed to hospital after the accident on October 28, but died at just two months old this week at Genoa’s Gaslini hospital.

Local reports have said the driver slammed on the brakes when the bus hit another woman on a zebra crossing in the San Teodoro quarter of Genoa.

Paramedics rushed the baby to hospital in a serious condition after the accident. 

He was placed in intensive care and underwent brain surgery before being transferred to the Neonatal and Pediatric Intensive Care Unit for further treatment. 

Doctors stopped treatment due to the ‘progressive worsening of the clinical conditions [and the child] no longer responding to either intensive treatment or a surgical approach due to the severity of the brain damage’, a statement said.

Instead, they begun palliative care to ensure that they young boy did not feel any pain. He died overnight on Wednesday, reports said.
