Did Jamie know Laoghaire tried to kill Claire?

Outlander viewers will remember how besotted Laoghaire was with Jamie in the first season of the show.

She became so jealous of his interest in Claire, she was driven to some extreme measures to try and make him hers.

This included trying to curse Claire with a doll as well as accusing her of witchcraft.

The latter had dire consequences for the nurse as she was put on trial along with Geillis Duncan (Lotte Verbeek).

During the trial, Laoghaire even turned up to testify against her in a move which almost cost Claire her life.

She only survived after Jamie turned up and took her away from the trial at the last moment.

Given how close Laoghaire came to killing Claire, many viewers were left gobsmacked when Jamie agreed to marry her.

While it was clear there was no love between Laoghaire and Jamie, it was still shocking he would agree to this match.

However, in the series, Jamie did know about her involvement as Claire told him.

As she was recovering in the wilderness with Jamie, she explained how it had been Laoghaire who was behind it all.

Graphia said: “We knew this was going to be a big shock to the audience, and non-book readers would really have trouble understanding why Jamie would marry this woman who had threatened Claire.

“We had a lot more to answer for with Laoghaire because this wasn’t just a girl with a crush.

“She got Claire arrested and actually testified against her in front of everyone.”

Because of this change they made in season one, she also revealed how they tried to justify Jamie’s choice.

They did this by inserting a sympathetic storyline in about Laoghaire where she helped Jamie and Claire change Lord Lovat’s (Clive Russell) mind.

As well as this, Graphia said: “That’s why we showed that scene where you see Jamie falling in love with the two young girls and not Laoghaire because they were so sweet to him during a time when he was really lonely and depressed.

“They brought him out of his shell, and it was the first time he felt happiness again after losing Claire.

“He didn’t even know they were Laoghaire’s daughters and they brought him joy.”

Outlander seasons 1-5 are available to stream on Amazon Prime Video.
