Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair safely recreate Cruel Intentions kiss at MTV Movie & TV Awards

Sarah Michelle Gellar and Selma Blair led the honorees Sunday at the inaugural MTV Movie & TV Awards: Greatest of All Time on Sunday night, as they safely recreated their infamously steamy kiss from their 1999 teen classic Cruel Intentions.

The duo was presented remotely with the Legendary Lip Lock Award, as Sabrina Carpenter introduced them from the stage of the awards show.

Gellar and Blair telecasted their acceptance speech from a backyard, as they sat on opposite sides of a patio table. 

As COVID-19 cases are surging throughout the US, MTV took major precautions by doing the red carpet and filming the actual event ahead of time which is a much different approach than several of the award shows that have happened the past few weeks.

All of the winners utilized Zoom to make their speeches from their respective homes with the famous golden popcorn in hand.

Presenters stepped out on a green screened set and stayed over six feet a part if there were multiple presenters and host Vanessa Hudgens never interacted directly with anyone else on camera.

There were also only two music performances by Sia and Steve Aoki with Travis Barker which were also taped in advanced.

During Gellar and Blair’s segment, the Buffy star joked that their kiss was ‘the single-most awarded kiss in cinema history — you don’t have to Google it, I already did.’ 

They originally took home Best Kiss at the MTV Movie Awards back in 2000 for the sexy scene, which they recreated onstage.

Blair said of the scene’s lasting impact: ‘I think the reason the kiss has resonated with people so long is not just for the initial shock value, but because it was a catalyst for so many young people to help them realize certain aspects of their sexuality and help make people comfortable to be who they really are.’

Gellar added: ‘It also represented a paradigm shift to a new dynamic towards acceptance in pop culture… Well, also it was super-hot.’

The ladies then ‘recreated’ the iconic movie moment, going in for the big kiss before smashing their faces against a plate of protective glass, keeping safe from COVID-19, as Gellar concluded: ‘Stay safe, MTV. And, 2020: end soon.’ 

Chadwick Boseman was posthumously honored as Hero for the Ages for his historic run as Black Panther in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. 

Costar Robert Downey Jr celebrated the late actor: ‘The second you first saw him onscreen or had the opportunity to meet him in person, his energy and intensity was undeniable.

‘There was something different and special about Chadwick Boseman. Mr. Boseman truly embodied what it meant to be a superhero. His impact as a groundbreaking leading man, as an icon onscreen… it won’t be quantified by the box office records he broke but by the legion of fans who will celebrate him for many years to come.’

The Iron Man star continued: ‘He was the most heroic when just being Chad. That’s when he was bigger than anyone he played onscreen.’

Don Cheadle also referenced Boseman’s portrayals of real-life heroes Thurgood Marshall, Jackie Robinson and James Brown: ‘With every role, he created a new legion of fans. He has an incredible power to unify people. The way he lived his life united people behind a higher purpose — and that will be his legacy.’

It comes after Boseman died in August at age 43, following a years-long private battle with colon cancer.

Drew Barrymore and longtime friend/costar Adam Sandler won the Dynamic Duo Award for their roles in The Wedding Singer (1998), 50 First Dates (2004) and Blended (2014).

She gushed over Sandler, as they gave their speech remotely from separate locations: ‘It was so much fun to make a movie with you in every of the last three decades.’ 

‘Yes, yes, and Drew, it’s 2020, so you know what that means,” Sandler said, as Barrymore quipped: ‘Everything sucks?’

‘Yeah, that’s true — but also, it’s a new decade so we get to make another movie together,’ he responded, as Barrymore teased another great comedy: ‘Right, well let’s wait until we find something amazing, we do have 10 years.’  

Kevin Hart won the Comedy Giant Award, saying in his speech: ‘Major thank you, MTV. I appreciate you guys so much. Comedy Giant Award, you know what? I’m gonna take the award, I’m actually gonna throw it back at my fans. Because this doesn’t happen without you guys. I’m gonna say thank you all for supporting me, loving me, holding me down throughout all the years. 

‘You got almost 20 years of comedy, 20 years of standup comedy. So, in any type of comedy that’s in this path that I’ve been on for all these years, the one thing that’s consistent is you guys. So, I love you, I appreciate you. 

‘Major shoutout to the Hart household, my wife, my kids. I do it for you guys. And once again, MTV, this is big. I hate that I can’t eat it. I wish I could eat it. If I could eat it, it would be great. It’s great either way, five-foot-four and now a giant.’

Gal Gadot won the She-ro Award for her starring role in 2017’s Wonder Woman and the upcoming Wonder Woman 1984, which premieres on Christmas.

She said before previewing an exclusive sneak peek of the new installment: ‘Thank you so much, MTV, for honoring me with the first-ever Golden GOAT She-ro Award. It’s been one of the greatest joys in my life to play this character.

‘She means so much to me, and I know how much she’s loved by all of her fans, so to be part of her legacy is truly, truly, truly special. I’m so excited for Wonder Woman fans to take this next journey with me in Wonder Woman 1984. I can hardly believe we finally get to experience it.’

Jamie Lee Curtis won the Scream Queen Award for her iconic performances in such films as Halloween (1978), The Fog (1980), Prom Night (1980) and Terror Train (1980).

She honored Halloween killer Michael Myers in her speech: ‘For me the greatest partnership and the only reason I’m standing here today, is my partnership with Michael, so I’d like to bring him out.’

‘Don’t be scared, they love you,’ she told a man dressed as the masked murderer, who came out from behind a tree to join her.

Curtis said to the at-home audience: ‘Everybody, Michael Myers, my friend and often foe. Don’t worry we both had COVID tests and he’s wearing a mask — the greatest ever. We hope you enjoy the next two movies, Halloween Kills and Halloween Ends. Thank you guys, love you! He’s so quiet!’  

Kristen Bell and Jason Segel accepted the Heartbreaking Breakup Award for their 2008 romantic comedy Forgetting Sarah Marshall.

Segel subtly gave his speech in character as his lovesick lead: ‘Hey everybody, thank you so much for this award. We’re really excited to receive it. I’m so happy to be here. It was a great experience, and to get to reunite with Sarah, it’s like awesome. So, it’s really good to see you.’

‘Kristen. It’s Kristen,’ Bell corrected him, as Segel responded: ‘Yea, yea, Kirsten.’ Bell continued: ‘Doesn’t matter, I’m excited to be here as well. This is such a cool thing to be recognized. This was a pivotal movie for me. 

‘I loved working with Jason and Nick Stoller. They wrote this brilliant film, and now you guys are acknowledging it. I mean, the greatest breakup, that is something to be proud of.’

Kevin Bacon won the first award of the night, taking home the Dance Your A** Off Golden GOAT for his 1984 classic dance flick Footloose.   

He said during his telecasted speech, while surrounded by actual goats: ‘Oh wow, I can’t believe it. I am so excited to be winning this Golden Goat Award for dancing my a** off all those years ago. I am truly honored.

‘I just want to say thank you to Herb Ross and Dan Melnick and Craig Zadan and Dean Pitchford for giving me the opportunity to be in that life-changing movie. And also I want to thank Lynne Taylor-Corbett, who taught me all those GOAT worthy moves all those years ago.’

The Friday the 13th actor celebrated the win with his new furry friends: ‘Guys, we got a Golden GOAT. Can you believe it? Can you believe it? A Golden GOAT!’        

Cobra Kai cast members Jacob Bertrand, Xolo Maridueña and Peyton List presented their costar William Zabka with the Zero to Hero Award, after he brought back his bully role Johnny Lawrence back from 1984’s Karate Kid for the Netflix series.

Zabka said: ‘Thank you, MTV. I’m honored to receive this bada** golden tub of popcorn, which wouldn’t be possible without a few heroes of my own. 

‘So, I’d like to thank Robert Kamen for writing The Karate Kid and creating this character, Josh Heald, Jon Hurwitz and Hayden Schlossberg, the creators of Cobra Kai, for picking up the torch three decades later and giving Johnny new life, depth, humor and a shot at redemption.

‘To Ralph Macchio, for the legacy we’ve shared and continue to share, there’s no Johnny Lawrence without your Danny LaRusso. You’re the best around.’    

Maddie Ziegler introduced her friend Sia for a performance of Hey Boy, from the soundtrack of her directorial debut in the upcoming musical film Music, premiering in 2021. 

Sia donned her signature massive wig with a giant bow to match, standing on a pedestal surrounded by dancers in shaggy dog costumes.

The green screen set featured a colorful landscape with a giant rainbow, a dog house, a fire hydrant and life-size chew toys scattered around her. 

Steve Aoki and Travis Barker were also on hand to perform some sick beats, as the awards show paused for commercial breaks.

Hosted by Vanessa Hudgens, the inaugural MTV Movie & TV Awards: GOAT took place in lieu of the regular awards show, which usually takes place in June, but was cancelled this year due to the pandemic. 

It was prerecorded with social-distanced appearances against green screens and no live audience, as winners accepted awards from home.
