Laura Hamilton shares affordable way to update your kitchen at 'fraction of the cost'

A Place in the Sun has recently secured a prime time spot on Channel 4. The programme helps Britons try and find their dream house abroad by enlisting the help of property experts. TV presenter Laura Hamilton has appeared on the show since February 2012 and has shared many property tips with fans. With DIY and home decorating seeing a surge in popularity this year, it’s no surprising that Laura herself has decided to make improvements to her home.

According to HouseholdQuotes.co.uk, a new kitchen on average costs around £8,000.

This includes VAT and fitting but excludes other major aspects such as appliances and other prep.

Homeowners should also be aware that plastering, wallpapers and ripping out an old kitchen will cost more.

As well as a fresh lick of paint, Laura decided to go a step further and re-tile her kitchen.

She decided to use “Moroccan-style” tiles which she put around the kitchen on the backsplash.

She added: “Again, that was pretty inexpensive – and I changed the blinds.”

The coronavirus pandemic has left many monitoring their bank accounts more closely.

With that in mind, Laura explained that it’s the “little touches” that make a difference.

She said: “It’s little touches like that which don’t have to cost a fortune when we haven’t got the money to spend right now because we’re not able to do our jobs or be mindful of what we’re spending – but we feel like we’re making a difference.”

If decorating your kitchen isn’t an option, then Laura has also advised homeowners on other ways in which they can improve other rooms in their property.

“To bathrooms you can change taps, you can change shower heads and it can transform your home in a big way,” she explained.

If you’re looking for some inspiration for your own home decor, the A Place in the Sun presenter also revealed what colours she chose to paint her kitchen.

Laura decided to keep it simple yet stylish with muted tones rather than bright colours.

She said: “I’ve got two colours in my kitchen. I went for a light grey around the main bulk of the kitchen then the central part of the kitchen I did in an off-white.

“The tiles I went for are grey and white Moroccan-style with different patterns.

“You can add little touches so inexpensively but it will make you feel like it’s different.”

A Place in the Sun continues weekdays at 3pm on Channel 4.
