Champions League: referee Stéphanie Frappart makes history in Juventus win

Stéphanie Frappart made Champions League history on Wednesday, becoming the first female to referee a game in the men’s competition as she took charge of Juventus’ 3-0 home win over Dynamo Kyiv.

Federico Chiesa had put the hosts ahead, heading home from Alex Sandro’s cross before Cristiano Ronaldo scored the 750th goal of his career, tapping in Álvaro Morata’s goal-bound shot for Juve’s second of the night. Morata completed the scoring as France’s Frappart enjoyed a quiet debut, save for a first-half Dynamo penalty shout that she waved away.

Juventus face a tall order to overtake Barcelona at the top of Group G after Ronald Koeman’s side strolled to a 3-0 win over Ferencvaros in Budapest. Lionel Messi was rested but the captain was barely missed as goals from Antoine Griezmann, Martin Braithwaite and an Ousmane Dembélé penalty put the game out of sight inside the first half-hour.

Dembélé and Miralem Pjanic missed chances to add to Barça’s lead in the second half but Barcelona will top the group unless Juve can rack up a big win at Camp Nou next week. “We played very well, we scored some great goals and I’m very happy with how we played, especially in the first half,” said Koeman.

Earlier, Alexander Sørloth’s stoppage-time goal earned RB Leipzig a precious 4-3 win over Istanbul Basaksehir, after the German side had squandered a two-goal lead in Turkey.

The visitors took a first-half lead when Marcel Sabitzer’s shot deflected in off Yussuf Poulsen. Nordi Mukiele added a second, but Basaksehir midfielder Irfan Kahveci cut the deficit just before half-time. Dani Olmo restored Leipzig’s two-goal cushion, but Kahveci struck twice more – the second a sumptuous free kick in the 85th minute – only for Sørloth to drill home from 12 yards out to snatch victory.

Julian Nagelsmann’s side host Manchester United in their final group game on Tuesday and can go through with a win, after United lost 3-1 at home to Paris Saint-Germain. All three teams have nine points; PSG are at home to eliminated Basaksehir in their final match.

Borussia Dortmund sealed their last-16 place with a 1-1 draw against Lazio despite the absence of Erling Haaland, who faces a month out with a muscle injury. Raphaël Guerreiro put the hosts ahead against the run of play after a quick passing move, but Ciro Immobile equalised from the penalty spot for Lazio.

The Italian side will also go through if they avoid defeat at home to Club Brugge in their final game. The Belgian side kept their hopes alive with a commanding 3-0 win over Zenit. Charles De Ketelaere put the hosts in front after 33 minutes and then won a second-half penalty, converted by Hans Vanaken before Noa Long got the third.

In Group E, Krasnodar earned their first Champions League win and secured Europa League qualification with a 1-0 home win over Rennes. Marcus Berg fired in the winner in a game between two sides already out of last-16 contention.
