‘He has since seen his partner Daniela and is now resting. He will remain under observation for a few days while he begins his recovery.

‘The club would like to thank the medical staff at Arsenal, the NHS paramedics, hospital staff and surgeons who, through their skill and early response, were of such help.

‘The club ask that Raul and his family are now afforded a period of space and privacy, before any further updates are provided in due course.’

Speaking after the match, in which Wolves won 2-1, Nuno Espirito Santo said: ‘He’s conscious. He is OK inside the gravity of the problem.

‘He speaks, he’s aware. We have to have a proper assessment. He’s in good hands.

‘You start hearing code red, it is serious. It was a bad moment for everybody. You see panic in their eyes and you start thinking how is he? We were worried.’

The game was goalless when Jimenez was hurt but goals by Pedro Neto and Daniel Podence secured Wolves’ first ever Premier League win at Arsenal.

Captain Conor Coady said: ‘The first thing we asked is “how’s Raul”. He is in the hospital and by all accounts he’s OK. He’s breathing. It was a massive collision.

‘We knew straight away it was a horrible clash of heads. I was at the front just behind him when it happened. It’s something we never want to see. We just hope and pray everything is OK.’

Wolves climbed to sixth but Arsenal are languishing in 14th after five defeats in their first 10 games, a run representing their worst start to a Premier League campaign.
