Liverpool player ratings vs Atalanta: Origi dire as Salah and Mane struggle in defeat

Liverpool slumped to a miserable defeat at home to Atalanta in their fourth Champions League group stage match, just weeks after beating the Italian side 5-0. The Reds had the chance to book their spot in the last 16 on Wednesday night but were dire at Anfield as Josip Ilicic and Robin Gosens both scored within four minutes of another to consign the hosts to a 2-0 loss. Express Sport rates the performances of Jurgen Klopp’s stars, as they failed to even produce a shot on target.

Liverpool player ratings vs Atalanta – Champions League

Alisson – 6

Strong save from goalscorer Gosens at his near post early on and equal to most other efforts. Couldn’t do much about either second-half goal.

Neco Williams – 5

Disappointed with the bulk of his deliveries in the opposition half, bar one stoppage-time ball into Mane, and struggled at times defensively.

Rhys Williams – 5

Nowhere near Gosens for Atalanta’s second goal when too busy watching the ball. Solid until then and good in possession.

Joel Matip – 6

Most dependable of the back-line defensively but gave the ball away too many times.

Kostas Tsimikas – 5

Had some decent bursts forward but no-one on the end of one particularly promising first-half cross. Didn’t follow his man for Atalanta’s opener.

Gini Wijnaldum – 5

Was putting in a solid performance defensively until he gave the ball away for Atalanta’s first goal. Might’ve been given a foul on another day, to be fair.

Curtis Jones – 5

Struggled to inject enough creativity into Liverpool’s play on the ball though brought good energy.

James Milner – 5

Less efficient than usual restored to central midfield though he hustled and bustled. Might’ve fared better at right-back.

Mohamed Salah – 5

Fired over the crossbar in the first half but otherwise an underwhelming return to the team after recovering from coronavirus. Only lasted an hour, though still the best of the starting front three.

Divock Origi – 3

Anonymous throughout. On the end of a first-half rollicking from Jurgen Klopp but didn’t improve much after it. Needs to do much more if he wants to play more regularly.

Sadio Mane – 4

One of his quietest displays in a long time with only a few fleeting moments of threat. Very disappointing for the Senegalese attacker’s standards.

Andy Robertson (on for Tsimikas 61) – 5

Too easily beaten in the air by Hans Hateboer for Atalanta’s second goal.

Fabinho (on for Wijnaldum 61) – 5

Played at the base of midfield but Liverpool still looked vulnerable. Spent the final few minutes at centre-back.

Diogo Jota (on for Salah 61) – 5

His direct drives forward demonstrated his threat but struggled to produce any end product.

Roberto Firmino (on for Origi 61) – 5

Unable to help improve Liverpool’s fortunes in the final third.

Takumi Minamino (on for Matip 83) – N/A

Got some late minutes.
