‘We’re working out some rights issues right now, so we’re just trying to figure out when the best time to make that film would be,’ continued the Home Alone filmmaker.

When asked about whether the famously puppet-based creatures would be updated with more modern computer generated technology, Columbus answered, ‘I would still do it the same way – I would do it as tangible puppets, not CGI.’

There are no definitive plans yet for the Gremlins trademark holder Warner Bros. to make a third film.

The first film was produced by Steven Spielberg and directed by Joe Dante, working off Columbus’ original screenplay.

The plot centered on a boy named Billy who inadvertently breaks three important rules concerning his new pet Gremlin named Gizmo and unleashes a horde of malevolently mischievous monsters on a small town.

The first film earned over $150million at the US box office, paving the way for a sequel that Columbus did not write.

That film only earned $41million.

After producing the first film, in which Kurt Russell plays Santa Claus, the Pennsylvania native stepped into the director’s chair for the sequel.

The film, which co-stars Russell’s real-life wife Goldie Hawn as Mrs. Claus, debuts on Netflix on November 25.
