Former British Cycling technical director Shane Sutton accused of 'lying' over doping knowledge

Former British Cycling technical director Shane Sutton accused by former team-mate of ‘lying’ in denying any knowledge of doping in cycling

  • Shane Sutton told MPs in 2017 that he had no prior knowledge of doping
  • But the former technical director of British Cycling has been accused of ‘lying’
  • Former team-mate Kvetoslav Palov made claim at an ongoing medical tribunal of ex-Team Sky and British Cycling medic Dr Richard Freeman

The former technical director of British Cycling has been accused of misleading a parliamentary committee by denying any knowledge of doping in cycling.

In 2017, Shane Sutton, who was also No 2 under Sir Dave Brailsford at Team Sky, told MPs — who would later conclude that Sky had crossed an ethical line when using medical exemption certificates to give certain medicines to riders — that he had no prior knowledge of the practice.

But at the ongoing medical tribunal of ex-Team Sky and British Cycling medic Dr Richard Freeman, Kvetoslav Palov, who was on the same ANC Halfords team as Sutton at the 1987 Tour de France, alleged that anyone involved in cycling as long as Sutton was lying, should they make such claims.

Pavlov had told the Department of Digital, Culture, Media and Sport in a statement of past suspicions about Sutton being aware of cyclists doping but his testimony did not appear in the DCMS report and he later admitted his statement in which he’d cited a specific incident when he had claimed he and Sutton had seen used needles lying on the floor of a toilet used by cyclists was incorrect in that he did not recall going into the toilet with Sutton.

Freeman admits ordering banned testosterone to the teams’ Velodrome HQ in 2011 but denies doing so in the knowledge that they were to dope a rider.

The hearing continues.
