AC Milan have been hit by an injury scare with Zlatan Ibrahimovic reportedly picking up a hamstring injury in the victory over Napoli, with the veteran striker out for at least ten days to undergo tests on the concern.

The Swedish frontman has rolled back the years since returning to Milan from his MLS exploits, leading the golden boot race ahead of Juventus’ Cristiano Ronaldo after six games.

The 39-year-old was at the double as Stefano Pioli’s side downed rivals Napoli on Sunday, with the Rossoneri running out 3-1 winners to maintain their lead at the top of Serie A.

Ibrahimovic was substituted after 79 minutes with what looked to be a muscle concern, with Lorenzo Colombo replacing the talisman.

And Sky Sport Italia reports via Football Italia that tests have highlighted a hamstring problem, and the Swede must undergo a fresh assessment in 10 days to review the knock.

The extent of the injury is not yet known, but the striker will miss Europa League clashes against Lille and Celtic, interspersed by the visit of Fiorentina in the league.

Ibrahimovic’s injury will come as a huge blow to Milan, who have enjoyed their best start in years after a turbulent 2019-20 campaign.

Pioli’s side are undefeated in their first six league outings and look as though they could pose a real threat to dethroning Juventus as well as challenging arch rivals Inter.

That is thanks in no small part to the performances of their veteran striker, who has notched 11 goals in 10 games, defying all expectations of him after his return from LA Galaxy.

Napoli boss Gennaro Gattuso, a former team-mate of Ibrahimovic’s, lauded the striker’s display after his side were defeated on Sunday.

‘Milan believe firmly in Ibra, they believe 100 per cent in what they are doing,’ Gattuso told Sky Sport Italia, via Goal. ‘He seems I think even stronger now than he was 10, 12 years ago.

‘They put the crosses in because they know he’ll get on the end of them. What we did today was create lots of chances and not believe in them fully.’
